在香港小學教育中，常識科是中文、英文和數學科以外第四個重要的科目,為學生提供多元的學習經驗,結合「科學教育」,「科技教育」與「個人、社會及人文教育」三個學習領域的知識、能力及價值觀。本學會的成立是由一群認同常識科的理念,以及關心常識科發展的教育同工發起,其起源可追溯至香港數理教育學會(HKASME)於 2012 年檢視學會發展策略時，重新肯定在小學推動科學教育的重要性,並於 2014 年獲香港教育局優質教育基金撥款,與多所夥伴小學共同協作，探討如何在小學常識科加強科學和科技學習元素,並且把實踐經驗整理,為老師提供教學材料和教師培訓,我們分享的協作成果深受常識科老師歡迎。
