The University of Manitoba’s Biomedical Engineering Design Team, BMED, exists to bring together students at the University of Manitoba interested in the biomedical field. In its 7th year of operation, the team consists of members through different disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering, environment, computer science, biology and more. The team focuses to source and propagate knowledge pertaining to the biomedical field, and to apply this knowledge through competing in biomedical engineering competitions, biomedical oriented events, research, tours and tutorials. The UMBMED team strongly believes in education through applications, and thus multiple projects are conducted to provide members with experience to a collaborative and product-driven environment. Each project undergoes phases of identifying a problem, designing prototypes, and testing them, allowing each member in different projects to have opportunities for contribution. BMED was founded in the Summer of 2012 under the name UMBMES and was changed to BMED in 2019 to reflect the new goal of being a competing entity.​
